Situated along the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula, Kommetjie is a quaint coastal village known for its stunning beaches and world-class surf spots. The water is cold, and conditions can be raw and heavy. Often referred to as the "Cold Water Hawaii," Kommetjie boasts a variety of surf breaks that cater to all levels of surfers, from beginners to big wave riders. With its unique wave formations and beautiful scenery, this hidden gem attracts surfers from around the globe to ride powerful waves.

Dungeons

Dungeons, off of Hout Bay’s sentinel, is a renowned big wave surfing spot that typically works for surfers during the winter months. This spot is infamous for its massive waves, which can reach heights of up to 25 feet (7.5 meters) or more. The waves here break over a reef, creating fast and hollow barrels.

Sunset Reef

Sunset Reef is a big wave spot, located 1.6 km out to sea off Long Beach, Kommetjie. On big days, watch out for the impact zone, which can suck you in and sometimes be tricky to get out of.

The Dune

The Dune features powerful A-frame waves that can produce both left and right rides with long barrels. It works best with the South Easter wind, which is offshore. The Dune is located between Kommetjie and Noordhoek, approximately a 3 km walk from both sides.

Long Beach

Long Beach is a versatile beach break that offers consistent surf throughout the year. The waves here can range from mellow to powerful, making it suitable for surfers of all skill levels. Long Beach features a sandy bottom and various peaks, providing multiple options for surfers to choose from. The beach is also ideal for beginners, as it offers plenty of space to practice and catch smaller waves, especially during the summer months when conditions are more favorable.

Inner Kom

As the name suggests, Inner Kom is located inside the bay and provides a more sheltered environment for surfers. This spot typically offers smaller, less powerful waves that can be good for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed surf session.

Outer Kom

In contrast, Outer Kom is known for its raw and powerful left-hand waves, with a lot of kelp around. This spot can produce sizable swells, and the waves break over a reef, offering challenging conditions that can be intimidating for less experienced surfers. Outer Kom is best suited for those who are comfortable in larger surf. The wave’s power and speed require good technique and a strong understanding of ocean dynamics.

365

The 365 surf spot, located at Soetwater, is worth checking out. You can see it from the coastal road to check if the waves are firing.

Crayfish Factory

Crayfish Factory is a powerful right-hander that can produce radical waves, particularly during larger swells. The waves here can be fast and powerful, and there is also a lot of kelp.

Scarborough Point

Scarborough Point can be a powerful left-hander, and the wave at the parking lot can fire up nicely as well. Both spots are worth having a look at, especially when conditions are right.
